About Us: EKST is an innovative startup in the site remediation sector. The Soil Treatment (ST) Technology uses electrokinetics to extract organic and inorganic contaminants from various media. This technology has the potential to be a gamechanger in the site remediation market. The ST Technology is superior to current practices both economically and environmentally. EKST has recently been awarded $1.5 million in funding to conduct a field demonstration of the ST Technology in Alberta’s oil and gas sector. EKST is in the process of raising in the order of $2-$3 million in private investment to advance commercialization of the ST Technology. EKST is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and skilled leader to drive the ST Technology development to commercial success. 

Position Overview: The VP of Engineering will lead the detailed engineering design, development, and practical application of a cutting-edge electrokinetic soil remediation technology, the ST Technology. 

Key Responsibilities: This position includes the following responsibilities: 

  • Leading and managing the engineering team in: Continually refining and improving the ST Technology, 
  • Creatively designing the configuration of the ST Technology for diverse applications, 
  • Optimizing the operation of the ST Technology for individual projects to maximize reliability and contaminant removal performance while minimizing costs and risks, 
  • Securing contracts for new site remediation projects, and 
  • Investigating and capitalizing on opportunities for new applications of the ST Technology, 
  • Sourcing and coordinating the design, testing, and implementation of the ST Technology with external engineering firms and remediation experts, 
  • Ensuring strict compliance with all health and safety, and all environmental regulations and standards, 
  • Developing and strictly adhering to project timelines, budgets, and resource allocations, 
  • Providing technical guidance and mentorship to engineering team members, 
  • Effectively engaging with external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, and industry partners, 
  • Persuasively managing client expectations and demands, and 
  • Keeping abreast of industry trends and scientific advancements in soil remediation. 

Qualifications: The requirements for this position include: 

  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering or a related STEM field. Preference will be given to those with one or more postgraduate degrees, 
  • Accreditation as a PEng with eligibility for APEGA accreditation, 
  • A minimum of 10 years of engineering experience in site remediation or a related environmental protection field, 
  • A visionary leader able to inspire and motivate the entire technical team, 
  • A highly motivated, goal-oriented personality with well-honed leadership skills, 
  • A proven track record successfully managing site remediation projects on schedule, under budget, and in compliance with decontamination requirements, 
  • A proven ability to work collaboratively and constructively in a challenging work environment with demanding schedules and budgets, 
  • Success innovating practical solutions in environmental or related fields, 
  • Knowledge and experience applying electrokinetics for site remediation is a significant bonus, 
  • Extensive practical experience with environmental regulations and interfacing with government agencies, 
  • Excellent data analysis and interpretation skills, 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, 
  • Proven success writing proposals and bids, and securing contracts for commercial site remediation projects, and 
  • A high-risk tolerance for working in an uncertain environment of innovation with a startup.
