On my business card, it says that I am a Community Enthusiast for the company I founded, 13 Ways, Inc. My resume will say I have three degrees – a B.Ed., an Hnrs B.Phil., and an MBA. It will also say I have served in some pretty significant leadership roles in government and that I wrote two editions of 13 Ways to Kill Your Community, both of which are national bestsellers.
However, what we achieve is not nearly as interesting as why we achieve it. The juicy bits of our stories are always in the why, not the what.
My ‘why’ is simple enough. Everything I do is for the sake of building stronger communities. I believe communities are the foundation on which we build stronger families, stronger businesses, and stronger nations. Build strong communities, and success will follow.
I help communities identify what is holding them back from finding success, and then I help them overcome it. I try to inspire them, and always shock them out of complacency. I believe we do not have time to dance around the issues, so I come at the issues and negative mindsets head on and honestly. If you do not want to get real, then I’m not the droid you are looking for.
As well, I believe that plans for the sake of plans are worthless. If you are not changing the mindset and the culture in your community or organization to adapt to the challenges and move forward, then those words on paper will collect dust on a shelf. Culture determines whether the success of your strategy.
My talents include seeing through the lies we tell ourselves, overcoming bad attitudes, targeted and focused tactical planning, communicating with those who are afraid of change, and building enduring prosperity for my client communities. I love what I do because I believe it is the most important job on earth.
